Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2023: summary and news

Monday, 20 March 2023

The Mobile World Congress , which has been held in Barcelona since 2006, has reaffirmed itself in this year's edition as one of the most important technology fairs in the world. 88,500 people (including professionals, visitors and journalists) participated in this event between February 27 and March 2.

According to the organizers of MWC 2023 , "the level of energy and support from partners, companies and legislators" has exceeded their hopes and expectations in this edition. After the impasse forced by the COVID pandemic, Mobile is gradually recovering the figures prior to it.

Although still far from the 2019 attendance record, in which the figure of 109,000 attendees was reached, MWC Barcelona is recovering its pulse. The figures in this regard are clear.

In this 2023 edition, whose motto was Velocity. Unleashing Tomorrow's technology today attendees came from more than 200 countries. 56% of them represented companies adjacent to the mobile universe.

Next we are going to see what have been the most outstanding novelties presented at the Mobile World Congress 2023 .

News in mobile telephony at the Mobile World Congress 2023

Those attending this edition of the MWC were able to learn about the latest developments and trends that are transforming the world of technology in general and that of mobile telephony in particular.

Mobile telephony, as was to be expected, occupied a stellar place in the congress. In it, the latest generation of 5G mobile devices and even some of the sixth generation were presented.

Telefónica, for its part, used one of the Fira Barcelona pavilions to deploy the first commercial 5G mobile network in the 26 gigahertz millimeter band. This deployment made it possible to provide ultra-fast mobile connectivity with minimal latencies.

The consolidation of folding smartphones has become evident in this edition of Mobile. Among the models of folding mobiles presented at the fair we can highlight the following:

  • Samsung Z Folder 4. This phone can be submerged in water and folds like a book.
  • Honor Magic Vs. Its double screen has allowed it to improve brightness by 20%.
  • Oppo Find N2 Flip. It offers the largest outdoor screen on the market: 3.26 inches.

Motorola , for its part, presented a roll-up phone prototype at the Mobile World Congress Barcelona . This device presents a flexible OLED panel that would reach up to 6.5 inches. To date it is unknown when this terminal will be able to reach the market.

Other novelties in the field of mobile telephony have occurred in relation to the quality of the photographs. In this sense, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra should be highlighted. This device equips a 200 megapixel camera.

We must also highlight the advances in the field of batteries. The 240MW and 250MW chargers from Realme and Oppo , respectively, enable fast charges of less than 10 minutes.

Another important innovation in the field of batteries has been liquid cooling introduced with the One Plus 11 Concept model. This cooling system makes it possible to reduce the temperature of the device by more than 2 degrees and reduces the charging time between 30 and 45 seconds.

Robots and other technologies at MWC 2023

For some time now, the MWC has been much more than the "mobile fair". Robotics and what has been called "the Internet of Things" (IoT) have a place in it.

In this last field, related to aspects as varied as the control of household appliances such as the monitoring of agricultural appliances so that they react to certain circumstances of climate and/or soil, it is necessary to highlight all those technological devices related to home automation .

The advances made within the framework of AI (Artificial Intelligence) have allowed devices for smart homes to learn to perform tasks based on a succession of trial-error tests.

In what refers to the universe of robotics, one of the great stars of this Mobile has been the CyberOne. This humanoid robot, introduced by Xiaomi , is endowed with arms and legs and perfectly maintains a bipedal position.

The Xiaomi CyberOne has up to 21 degrees of freedom in movement and a speed of 0.5 seconds in real time for each degree of freedom, which allows it to simulate some movements of the human being.

For its part, the Spanish company Alisys presented a quadruped robot for security and defense tasks in high-risk areas. The final destination of a robot with these characteristics would be to carry out missions considered high risk for humans.

Finally, in the field of electric mobility we can highlight:

  • Tesla 's announcement of a car that, with 500 km of autonomy, would reach 225 km/h. In principle, this model would be intended for law enforcement.
  • The Mi Scooter 4 Ultra, an electric scooter launched by Xiaomi and with 70 kilometers of autonomy.
  • The flying taxi presented by the South Korean SK Telecom which, together with the startup Joby Aviation, aims to reduce travel times in cities with high levels of traffic.

The technological novelties of this edition, as happened with the Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2022 , have not been few. We will have to wait for the 2024 edition to continue seeing where mobile telephony is progressing and all the sectors represented in this important and lucrative technology fair. Not surprisingly, GSMA , the company in charge of organizing the MWC, expected an economic impact of around 350 million euros for the edition that has just ended.
